The Enemy Within V

(RUN OPENING CREDITS)

1. EXT. BRIDGE (NIGHT)

THE DOCTOR and a shaken PERI stand by the pulverized remnants of the bridge. The Doctor shines a torch at the wreckage on the other side.

DOCTOR
I think I’ve been slightly too optimistic. Our not so friendly ghost doesn’t want anyone to leave just yet.

Peri now looks on the verge of panic.

PERI
You heard what Daniel said, that thing is sick! It’s evil!

DOCTOR
Evil? IT’S NOT EVEN A NUISANCE!

The Doctor directs the shout at the night.

DOCTOR
Now, come on.

PERI
Where?

DOCTOR
Back to the manor house.

PERI
They’ll think we killed Daniel! That Colonel might shoot us!

DOCTOR
You’d rather spend the night out here?

There is a creaking noise in the distance.

DOCTOR
Come on.

They turn and head back up the hill. The noise begins to return.

2. EXT. HILLOCK (NIGHT)

The noise grows louder and strange, taking on the rasping, throaty noise we now know so well. Gently zoom in on DANIEL’S corpse. The distant sound of the thing in the tunnel screaming can be heard and instantly Daniel’s eyes pop open.

3. THE BEYOND

The creature is running at breakneck speed down the tunnel as we struggle to keep out. The scream gets louder and louder, a wail of the restless dead. The thing runs into the darkness and is lost. A moment of total darkness perforated by the scream.

4. EXT. BRIDGE (NIGHT)

An establishing shot of the swampy area as we hear the muffled scream. Then, suddenly, the surface of the bog warps, splits and cascades to reveal the hideous face. As it clears the muddy surface, it’s scream is a deafening segue into...

(FINISH OPENING CREDITS)
(THE ENEMY WITHIN)
(EPISODE TWO: SHADOWS)

1. EXT. HILLOCK (NIGHT)

The Doctor and Peri are moving through the trees when they hear the scream.

PERI
W-what was that?

DOCTOR
Something... unhappy.

Peri looks around, but everything is dark and still.

PERI
Is that all?

DOCTOR
Something long since dead, dredged up to roam the earth once again. Something large, unfriendly and, unless I’m mistaken, next to the river.

PERI
How close?

DOCTOR
Too close. Stay quiet, Peri. Don’t make a sound.

Tense silence broken only by the wind in the trees. Another scream. Peri tightens her grip on the Doctor’s arm.

2. EXT. BRIDGE (NIGHT)

This is shot so we never get a clear view of the thing. A snatch of its deformed face or twisted limb, the rest being shot from its POV (normal, no SFX). Mud slides from its white body as it rises from the bog. It begins to move through the mist towards the shore. A hand with very long, nail-less fingers grabs a tree trunk and effortlessly hauls the thing onto land. It screams again.

3. EXT. HILLOCK (NIGHT)

The Doctor and Peri listen to the noise. They whisper.

PERI
The ultimate experience in grueling terror?

DOCTOR
Hardly. But you never met Tegan, did you? Come on. Quietly!

They gingerly begin to move up the hill as fast and as silently as they can.

4. EXT. BRIDGE (NIGHT)

The creature is moving down the path through the trees. It is totally silent as it moves over shrugs and past thickets. It is heading in a straight direction, not slowing for anything. It comes across the low branch that blocks its way. A flash of its face as it screams once more, then a deafening crash as white hands wrench the branch away, uprooting it upwards and out of sight.

5. EXT. HILLOCK (NIGHT)

Peri’s nerve cracks.

PERI
Change of plan! RUUUUUUUN!!!

She sprints up the hill. The Doctor follows as fast he can. We pan down the hill, to where Daniel’s body hangs from the noose.

6. EXT. BRIDGE (NIGHT)

The branch has been reduced to matchwood. The creature screams continuously as it charges straight ahead through the trees.

7. EXT. HILLOCK (NIGHT)

It enters the clearing and slows to a halt as it regards Daniel. His eyes open and he looks at the thing with fear, unable to move or even cry out as it slowly closes in on him, bone-white talons moving towards his throat.

8. EXT. OUTSIDE THE MANOR (NIGHT)

The Doctor and Peri scramble over the rise and pause to catch their breath, still moving towards the house. The screams stop. The Doctor shushes Peri, urging her to stop and listen. A faint, distant rustling is heard.

PERI
W-what... what is that?

DOCTOR
I don’t know, so shhh!

A beat. The rustling continues, then silence.

DOCTOR
It’s down there, keeping out of sight.

PERI
Daniel’s down there.

DOCTOR
It can’t hurt him now, Peri. You know, I’m rather curious as to what it looks like.

PERI
I’m not.

DOCTOR
Then stay here.

Without another word, he strides to the edge of the hill. Peri sways, uncertain whether to stay or follow. She follows him, but he blows out his cheeks.

DOCTOR
Nothing to worry about, Peri.

PERI
Then why are you still whispering?

He ignores the question.

DOCTOR
Whatever it is, it’s gone.

PERI
And Daniel?

DOCTOR
Still there.

PERI
I can barely see a thing, it’s so dark.

DOCTOR
Well, I don’t want to waste the torch’s batteries. Let’s go shall we?

At that moment the breeze picks up to a gale force that nearly knocks them over. It rapidly fades to stillness once more. A crunch of gravel behind them. They spin around. TRACEY stands not far behind them, looking worried.

TRACEY
Doctor? Miss Brown? What’s going on?

We see from the edge of the hill as they continue their conversation. We hear a faint breathing noise.

DOCTOR
Something very, very nasty. We have to get inside and lock the doors.

TRACEY
The madman?

PERI
Worse, now let’s move!

TRACEY
What about Daniel, is he out here? We can’t just leave him?

DOCTOR
Please, Tracey, we can’t stay out here!

TRACEY
But he might be in danger!

PERI
Not as much as we are! Move!

They hurry towards the house. Tracey resists.

TRACEY
What’s happened to him? Let me go!

She twists free of Peri’s grasp.

TRACEY
If he’s out here, I’ll...

There is a rustle from the edge of the hill. Tracey falls silent. They turn their attention to the gloomy edge of the grounds. Nothing. Peri moves to speak when there is a sound like gravel crunching. The Doctor turns to face the source of the noise. Nothing.

TRACEY
You’re all getting jumpy. There’s nothing...

Suddenly, there is a deafening scream of the creature. The trees sway as if in an invisible, silent hurricane. Branches slash madly, leaves are swirling around them. The trio huddle against each other, unsure what to do. Another scream. The thing emerges from the gloom. Peri screams. They turn and run up the steps towards the house.

PERI
It’s right behind us!

A twisted foot crunches on the gravel, then another. It is closing in.

TRACEY
The door’s locked! Pascoe! PASCOE! LET US IN!

The Doctor wastes no time and snatches a familiar silver shape from his pocket and aims it at the lock. Peri stares into the night as we see the silhouette of the creature as it breaks cover, lurching towards them, its limbs flailing.

PERI
Doctor!

The Doctor presses the control and the sonic screwdriver zaps the lock. He tries the door. Nothing. Shocked, he zaps it again and again. We see a close up of the face screaming, its narrowed eyes burning. It reaches the steps... Tracey stares at it and screams just as the door unlocks. The trio fall backwards, missing the huge, twisted white claw that swings at them.

9. INT. HALLWAY (NIGHT)

The Doctor, Tracey and Peri are sprawled on the floor, the creature half visible outside the open door. The Doctor raises his leg and kicks at the door that swings closed, heavily. He rises and zaps the lock again with the screwdriver as the others get out. We can hear the muffled screams, then the door shudders one... twice... silence.

TRACEY
Is it gone?

DOCTOR
I think so.

Carefully, they move back from the door. Nothing. The Doctor peers out the window.

10. EXT. OUTSIDE THE MANOR (NIGHT)

We pull out from the Doctor’s face at the window. The creature is gone. We pull out further. There is no sign of it, but we see it has not simply wandered off but vanished completely.

11. INT. HALLWAY (INT)

The Doctor turns to face the others.

DOCTOR
It’s gone.

TRACEY
Gone?

DOCTOR
Vanished, disappeared, gone!

TRACEY
But where...?

A loud clicking. The Doctor, looking past Peri and Tracey, slowly raises his hands.

DOCTOR
Ah.

Peri is tense and does not move.

PERI
What is it?

DOCTOR
Out of the proverbial into the metaphysical.

Beyond them stands the COLONEL, rifle cocked and aimed straight at them. Behind them, EMILY is tending to MAURICE, who is in shock and gibbering slightly. The blood stains are significantly smaller since the last time we were here.

COLONEL
Tracey! Move away from them, be a good girl. As for you two...

DOCTOR
Colonel, please don’t do anything you might regret later...

PERI
Or that WE will regret here and now.

DOCTOR
No, don’t do anything like that, either. Good point, well made, Peri.

EMILY
Where’s Daniel?

DOCTOR
Well, you see, he ran out the French windows in the... Saloon. Oh no.

COLONEL
What?

DOCTOR
They’re still open! That’s where it’s gone – the open windows! Once it gets inside...

Without warning, the Doctor charges down the corridor, jumping over the dazed Maurice, taking everyone by surprise. The Colonel struggles to train his rifle onto the Doctor’s retreating back.

COLONEL
Stop right now or I’ll blow you to pieces!

Peri shoulder-charges him, and the shot goes wild, knocking a potted plant over on top of Maurice. The Colonel falls over, on top of Emily. The Doctor dives through a doorway...

11. INT. SALOON (NIGHT)

Deserted. The Doctor slows to an absolute halt as he enters. The curtains blow in the cold breeze. Carefully, the Doctor moves through the room towards the open doors. Pitch darkness lies beyond. There is a distant, rasping noise. The Doctor freezes. Silence. No movement. He moves towards the doors and is about to close them when he whips his hand back. We see frost is on the edges of the window frames. The Doctor hastily shoves them closed and locks them. He moves back and peers out the window. Behind him, we see the POV of someone lurching unsteadily across the room towards the Doctor, who is absorbed in searching for the thing outside. At the last second, he gives up and turns around, reacting with shock as he sees...

Daniel, a crazed look in his baggy eyes, the noose still around his neck. His head lolls at an angle as his stiff, useless arms grab the Doctor by the shoulders, causing him to cry out as he’s smashed against the glass.

DANIEL
Why did you KILL me, Doctor?!? WHY?

The Doctor gasps, choking.

DOCTOR
I never...

Daniel, lifting the Doctor by the neck, brings him face to face.

DANIEL
You can’t keep me dead, Doctor! Not like the others!

A familiar rasping voice is mingling with Daniel’s fury.

THE VOICE (VO)
You will feel pain! You will feel fear! And then you will...

He flings the Doctor against the French windows with enough force to shatter the glass. The Doctor slides roughly to the ground, clutching his throat as the horrible laughter explodes into a deafening roar around him. A hand approaches his face. As the fingertips touch his face, he cries out and rolls away. The noise ends.

PERI (VO)
Doctor?

The Doctor, shivering, turns and peers upwards. Peri is crouched over him.

PERI
What happened?

The Doctor doesn’t answer. He looks feverish. Peri reaches down and tries to help him to sit up. He flinches at her touch.

PERI
Hey, hey, take it easy. There’s broken glass everywhere. It’s all right.

The Doctor nods, swallowing. He regains a shard of his old confidence.

DOCTOR
Yes... yes. Help me up.

She does so. He kicks the glass to one side and draws the curtains.

PERI
That won’t keep that thing out, will it?

DOCTOR
Nothing will.

PERI
What? You mean it’s inside?!

DOCTOR
Of course it is! Didn’t you see it?

PERI
See what?

DOCTOR
Peri, this is no time for games!

PERI
What games? I finally get in here to find you writhing in a heap of broken glass, and you think I’M playing games!

DOCTOR
You should know by now not to judge by appearances, Miss Brown!

Silence. Peri looks around the room, nervously.

PERI
It got in... It attacked you, didn’t it?

DOCTOR
Yes. Using Daniel’s body.

PERI
But... but he’s down the hill, hanging from a tree! Isn’t he?

DOCTOR
I would so dearly love to agree, but he was here. Attacking me! Blaming me for it all...

PERI
That’s a bit harsh for a suicide... So, uh, what happened to him?

DOCTOR
I don’t know. Maybe it wasn’t really him, maybe it was some kind of mental projection...

The door opens and Tracey runs in.

TRACEY
Doctor, you better have a good explanation, or the Colonel will... Oh God...

She trails off, covering her mouth in horror. Peri hurries over to comfort her, and then follows her gaze. She jumps back. The Doctor stays where he is.

PERI
Doctor...

DOCTOR
I know... I know!

He closes his eyes in exhaustion. We see, lying on the floor is Daniel’s body. It’s quite dead, but he is grinning evilly and there might just be a twinkle in his eye. We distantly hear the laughter again.

- to be continued...
